When someone nearby searches for a sweet shop, a hotel or a clinic, Google shows a few businesses on the map, each with a star rating and a number of reviews. Those two numbers often decide which one gets the call. The good news: getting more genuine reviews is mostly a matter of asking at the right moment and making it easy.
Why reviews matter so much
Google says that the number of reviews and your rating are part of how it decides which local businesses to show. Just as important, customers read them: recent, detailed reviews with replies from the owner make a business feel real and cared for, especially to pilgrims and visitors who don't know the town.
Step 1: Get your review link
Open your Google Business Profile (search your business name on Google while signed in, or use the Google Maps app) and look for Ask for reviews or Get more reviews. Copy the short link it gives you. Anyone who opens it goes straight to the review box, with no searching.
Step 2: Ask at the right moment
- Hotels: at check-out, when the guest thanks you for the stay
- Restaurants and sweet shops: when the customer compliments the food, or with the bill
- Clinics: after the visit, in the appointment follow-up message
- Shops: when the customer returns happy, or a day after delivery
- Services: when the work is finished and the customer says they're pleased
Step 3: Make it one tap
- A small QR code on the counter or reception desk that opens your review link
- A short WhatsApp message with the link, sent after the visit or delivery
- A card in the box or with the room key: "Enjoyed your stay? A review helps other pilgrims find us."
A simple message that works: "Thank you for visiting us! If you were happy with our service, could you share a quick review? It helps others find us: [your link]". Customers are happy to help when asked personally and politely.
Tip: Reply in the language the review was written in. A Hindi review with an English reply feels distant; a reply in the customer's own words feels personal.
Step 4: Reply to every review
Thank people by name and mention something specific ("glad you liked the kesar peda"). For a negative review, stay calm, apologise for the experience, say what you've done about it and invite them to contact you directly. Future customers judge you more by your reply than by the complaint.
What not to do
- Never buy reviews or use review "services". Google removes fake reviews and can restrict or suspend your profile.
- Don't offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews. Google doesn't allow incentivised reviews.
- Don't ask only happy customers while steering unhappy ones away. Google calls this selective soliciting and doesn't allow it.
- Don't review your own business or ask staff and family to do it.
A five-minute weekly routine
- 1Reply to all new reviews.
- 2Send your review link to this week's happy customers.
- 3Add two or three fresh photos to your profile.
- 4Check your hours, especially before festivals.
