In Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Govardhan, a handful of festival weeks bring in a large share of the year's business. But visitors don't decide during the festival: they search for rooms, taxis, sweets and gifts weeks before. This guide shows when to start, what to do each week, and the mistakes that waste festival budgets.
In Braj, timing matters more than budget
A small budget spent four weeks before Janmashtami usually does more than a big one spent in festival week, when rooms are already booked and everyone is advertising at once. Start early, and make sure the page people land on answers their questions: dates, prices, availability and how to book.
The Braj festival calendar for businesses
| Festival | Usually falls | Start preparing | Who gains most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holi (Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, flower Holi in Vrindavan) | Feb–Mar | 6–8 weeks before | Hotels, travel, sweets, clothes |
| Guru Purnima and Mudiya Purnima (Govardhan) | Jul | 4–6 weeks before | Govardhan stays, food, travel |
| Janmashtami and Nandotsav | Aug–Sep | 6 weeks before | Hotels, sweets, poshak and shringar, travel |
| Radhashtami (Barsana) | About two weeks after Janmashtami | With Janmashtami | Barsana stays, travel, devotional stores |
| Kartik month, Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Annakut | Oct–Nov | 6–8 weeks before | Hotels, gift boxes, jewellers |
| Wedding season | Nov–Feb, with breaks | 2–3 months before | Jewellers, salons, caterers, venues |
Tip: Festival dates follow the Hindu calendar and move every year. Check the exact dates as soon as they are announced and count your weeks back from there.
A simple six-week plan before any festival
- 1Six weeks before: update your Google Business Profile (special hours, fresh photos) and add a festival page or section to your website with dates, prices and how to book.
- 2Five weeks before: decide your offer, whether a room package, a gift box or a festival collection, and list the reels and posts you'll need.
- 3Four weeks before: start posting: behind the scenes, the offer, and last year's festival if you have photos.
- 4Three weeks before: start ads aimed at people planning a trip or buying gifts, sending them to the festival page, not your home page.
- 5Two weeks before: message past customers who have agreed to hear from you, with the offer and a booking link.
- 6Festival week: post every day, reply to enquiries within minutes, and keep your hours on Google correct.
- 7After the festival: thank your customers, ask happy ones for a Google review, and note what worked for next year.
Ideas by type of business
- Hotels and dharamshalas: a festival page with availability and booking advice, and room-tour reels showing the distance to the temple.
- Sweet shops: a gift-box catalogue with weights and prices, and a bulk-order form for companies and families.
- Jewellers and clothes shops: a festival collection page, try-on reels and a WhatsApp catalogue for people who can't visit.
- Travel and taxis: fixed-fare festival packages (Barsana for Holi, Govardhan parikrama) published early.
- Restaurants: festival thalis and timings, and sattvik or no-onion-garlic menus clearly labelled.
- Devotional stores: poshak, shringar and puja kits for each festival, orderable on WhatsApp by visitors from outside Braj.
Mistakes that waste festival budgets
- Starting in festival week, when prices are highest and decisions are already made.
- Running ads to your home page instead of a page about the festival offer.
- Fake urgency, such as "only 2 rooms left" when it isn't true. It breaks trust, and ad platforms reject it.
- Wrong hours on Google during the festival, which sends customers to a closed shop.
- Buying followers or likes. They don't buy anything, and they make real reach worse.
